SDOs, magistrates to take call on tankers

AURANGABAD: The state revenue department recently issued a government resolution (GR) bestowing the authority on sub-divisional officers (SDOs) and magistrates from drought affected districts to take a call on the number of water tankers to be deployed in their areas as per severity of the water scracity.Earlier, only district collectors were vested with this authority. “Gangapur, Vaijapur, Sillod, Paithan and tehsil limits of Aurangabad are among the nine talukas of Aurangabad district where most tankers have been deployed,” said authorities.As per official announcement, ‘severe’ drought has been declared in all nine talukas of Aurangabad district following a scrutiny as per a revised drought manual of the Centre made public in 2016. tnn The aforesaid order applies to the 268 revenue circles in 151 talukas in Maharashtra where the state government has already declared a drought.The move has been welcomed by activists who believe that the process of tanker deployment would become swift by virtue of decentralisation of power.
