Aurangabad: All India Majlis E Ittehadul Muslimeen sacked controversial corporator Syed Mateen from the party’s primary membership on Monday. This is the first time in the state that a sitting corporator’s primary membership has been removed as a part of disciplinary action. The involvement of Syed in many controversies fuelled the action by the MIM.The decision was taken during a marathon meeting convened by Aurangabad central MLA Imtiaz Jaleel in his office with all the party corporators in the afternoon. When contacted, MLA Imtiaz said that Syed, since his election as corporator, had been found to be involved in anti-party activities, each time bringing a bad name to the MIM.The MLA said that Syed ignoring party president Asaduddin Owaisi’s directive to campaign for the party in the Telangana and Dhule elections finally nailed him.Despite several attempts, Mateen could not be reached for comment.Syed, who was slapped with the stringent Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act a few months back, had sparked off a major controversy after he opposed the General Body’s move to pay tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee on August 17.Syed’s stand was followed by heated arguments during which he was thrashed by the corporators from different parties. Later, the state level committee set aside police’s move of slapping MPDA on the corporator, following which he was released from prison about a couple of months ago.In August 2017, Syed had triggered another controversy by opposing the singing of Vande Mataram during the GB meeting. That incident had resulted in tension in the city. The MIM corporators, who have been showing respect by standing for Vande Mataram during the GB, had questioned his timing for the move.Syed has a series of cases, including inciting communal hatred amongst members of different communities, registered against him in the city.Group leader Syed Naser Siddiqui said, “Mateen, for the past three consecutive years, has been bringing bad name to the party (MIM). Every time he made us go on the defensive and helped the rivals from diverting key issues plaguing the city.”Sources in MIM said that recently, Syed had suspiciously gone missing and failed to return. Around the same time, another corporator too reportedly went missing, which did not go down well with the higher-ups, who finally decided to take a final call on him on Monday. A few days ago, Syed is said to have returned to the city.
