Aurangabad: The standing committee of the civic administration upheld the decision to install nine decentralised waste processing units at various locations across the city on Monday. Being the first mechanical waste processing plant, the unit was expected to help the city tide over the waste crisis. However, the decision is yet to receive an endorsement from AMC.Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had looped in Nagpur-based ‘Waste Bin’ to install and operate decentralised waste processing units with a capacity of 16 tonnes per day (TPD). “The decision to set up six additional units will be taken based on the performance of the first three units,” said Bhombe. The bailing machine used for compressing dry waste also fails to serve the purpose as the dry waste is mixed with organic waste,” said Waste Bin’s Prashant Chendke.

Aurangabad: The standing committee of the civic administration upheld the decision to install nine decentralised waste processing units at various locations across the city on Monday. However, the decision is yet to receive an endorsement from AMC.Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had looped in Nagpur-based ‘Waste Bin’ to install and operate decentralised waste processing units with a capacity of 16 tonnes per day (TPD). Initially, the civic body proposed to install nine such units and decided to start 3 units—one each at Chikalthana, Padegaon and Harsul Sawangi—near the 150 TPD plants which have already been proposed for these sites. The work order for establishing the 150 TPD waste processing units at Chikalthana and Padegaon have been issued to Waluj-based Mayo Vessels after tender process. The Harsul project is under tendering process.Resistance from locals at Harsul and stay by minister of social justice Rajkumar S Badole at Padegaon prompted the civic body to take up the work of the 16-TDP processing plant at Chikalthana first. Currently, the work is underway at Harsul while the work at Padegaon is yet to start. The 16-TPD unit at Chikalthana became operational from November. Being the first mechanical waste processing plant, the unit was expected to help the city tide over the waste crisis. Lack of coordination between the civic body and the contractor churned a debacle out of the Chikalthana unit.A ground visit by TOI revealed that mixed waste is being poured into the Chiklathana waste processing unit, causing the screening machine to get stuck frequently. “The mixed waste feed provided to us has reduced the capacity of the processing plant. We have to engage more manual labour to undertake secondary segregation. The bailing machine used for compressing dry waste also fails to serve the purpose as the dry waste is mixed with organic waste,” said Waste Bin’s Prashant Chendke. The erratic power supply only adds to the woes as it reduces the efficiency of the unit.On Monday, chairman of the standing committee Renukadas Vaidya told TOI that the committee had decided to go ahead with the establishment of nine units. Vaidya added that the list of the locations where the units were to come up is with the head of the solid waste management (SWM).SWM cell head Nandkishore Bhombe said that a decision was yet to be taken on whether the nine units would come up. “The decision to set up six additional units will be taken based on the performance of the first three units,” said Bhombe.
