Aurangabad: Ahead of the construction of roads worth Rs100 crore, the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has asked residents and government agencies not to dig up roads for cable or pipe laying purposes once the roads are done. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Corporation Ltd (MSEDCL) has dug up old roads at various locations, causing huge inconvenience to people. As per the permission given by the AMC, the MSEDCL has dug up roads across the city to lay distribution cables under the ground. According to the rules, the AMC allows the power distribution company to dig up the roads on the condition that it refills or patches them up later. This is done either by the MSEDCL itself or by depositing road restoration charges with the AMC.For the last 3-4 months, roads have been dug up at Cidco N-2 Kamgaar Chowk, Cidco N-3, N-4, N-5 and various places in the old city. The digging work has left the roads unfit for use, causing a sudden jerk to motorists that often leads to accidents.Additional commissioner DP Kulkarni agreed that there was an adjustment made with the MSEDCL about the road restoration charges but added that now it is the responsibility of the power company to get the roads repaired. “Until they undertake the repair work, we have stopped them from carrying out any further work,” Kulkarni said.He added that according to the HC order, the AMC has issued notices to carry out any underground works before the new roads are constructed. The claims of Kulkarni about the road restoration charges, however, have been denied by MSEDCL superintending engineer Sanjay Sarag who said that it is the AMC’s job to refill the roads now. “In a meeting held with the AMC in March, we had laid out our proposed works. It had been decided then that the AMC will not pay us Rs4 crore of its outstanding energy bill and instead will carry out the restoration work,” said Sarag.
