Aurangabad: The Aurangabad city police have registered an offence against unidentified suspects after a mobile phone with two batteries were recovered from the Aurangabad central prison on Friday. The articles have been found placed in an empty barrack near Circle 16 of the prison during a surprise screening by the prison officials. Prison officials informed that no sim card was found in the phone. The place from where these articles have been recovered is possibly the collection point where the prison staff would keep the cell phone and the inmates would collect them,” an officer, privy to the internal probe, said. “The involvement of prison staffers deployed at the entrance as well as the ones having access to the prison cells cannot be ruled out,” a jail official said.Due to frequent change in duty of staffers at the prison entrance and due to installation of high definition CCTV cameras at the entrance, it is difficult for the inmates to carry such articles along with them. The prison department has ordered a probe in the recovery and the process of scanning the footage of CCTV cameras is underway.“Informers among the inmates have informed that some prison staffers in exchange for money would provide cellphones as well as batteries to the inmates. Moreover, the barrack where the mobile phone was found has been lying vacant for the past two months.Recovery of the articles has raised serious questions over the security and functioning of the prison that also houses hardened as well as high profile criminals from different parts of the country.Aurangabad commissioner of police Chiranjeev Prasad said, “Recovery of a mobile phone is quite serious and we have strong suspicion that such communication gadgets are aiding criminal activities from outside the prison.”Harsul police inspector Manish Kalyankar said, “We have sent a letter to the cyber police asking them to help us out with the details of the sim cards that have been used in the seized cell phone.”The recovery of the cellphone has exposed the alleged nexus between the criminals and prison staff.
