Women waste pickers suffering from anaemia, reveals civic health camp

Aurangabad: The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) facilitated a free health check-up camp for informal waste pickers at the Sant Tukaram Natyagruh on Monday. The waste pickers, mainly women, were chiefly diagnosed with anaemia at the camp.As many as 144 women were checked by the AMC under the initiative of the free health check-up camp. Severe anaemia can be life threatening, especially during childbirth, the ministry states.At Monday’s camp, all 250 women who are working for the AMC as waste pickers in an informal arrangement, were called for check-up. Mayor Nandkumar Ghodele had inaugurated the event.Ashabai Doke, the representative of the women workers said that the workshop was helpful in understanding how women can benefit from the various schemes to raise a business or cottage industry. Anaemia is a form of malnutrition that limits growth, mental development, education and work capacity.

One patient was diagnosed with diabetes and five were found to be severely anaemic. These patients have been called to their nearby AMC health care centre for further treatment.Under the central health and family welfare ministry, the campaign ‘Anaemia Mukt Bharat’ is being run, under which women are tested for their haemoglobin count and are provided with the necessary supplements and diet recommendations to overcome the anaemia. Anaemia is a form of malnutrition that limits growth, mental development, education and work capacity. Severe anaemia can be life threatening, especially during childbirth, the ministry states.At Monday’s camp, all 250 women who are working for the AMC as waste pickers in an informal arrangement, were called for check-up. The women were checked for their blood glucose levels, haemoglobin count as well as blood pressure.A team of 17 members including doctors, nurses, lab technicians and attendants of the AMC were engaged to execute the check-ups. Those who were found to be anaemic were provided with folic acid supplements and were guided about consuming an iron-rich diet to overcome the condition.The women workers said that this was the first time that such a camp had been organized for their benefit.The AMC also facilitated a workshop on entrepreneurship development for the members of self-help groups at the same venue.Chairperson of the women and child welfare committee Madhuri Adwant guided around 300 women participants who were present for the workshop. Mayor Nandkumar Ghodele had inaugurated the event.Ashabai Doke, the representative of the women workers said that the workshop was helpful in understanding how women can benefit from the various schemes to raise a business or cottage industry.
