Aurangabad: A police sub-inspector serving with the Karmad police station of Aurangabad rural, was suspended on Wednesday on disciplinary grounds after he allegedly manhandled a village deputy sarpanch and brutally thrashed an informer.The alleged incident took place on Tuesday, following which hundreds of villagers reached the police station in protest against the incident and demanded stringent action against the officer.Taking serious cognisance of the incident, Superintendent of police Arti Singh rushed to Karmad police station and heard both the parties, before assuring the angry villagers that she would initiate action against the PSI, Sharadchandra Rodge.When contacted, Singh confirmed suspending PSI Rodge on disciplinary grounds, pending inquiry. She said, “The policy is very clear, we will not tolerate any kind of indiscipline or unwarranted use of force from the men in uniform.”Sources said it was on Monday that an informer tipped off Rodge about a gambling den being run in the limits of the Karmad police station. Rodge immediately rushed to the spot but failed to find anything to corroborate the informer’s input.Angered over being provided with false information, the officer brutally thrashed the informer. Village deputy sarpanch Datta Ukarde learnt about the incident, reached out to the police station and reasoned with the officer as to why the village man had been assaulted. This did not go down well with the officer, who allegedly manhandled Ukarde.As soon as the news about the slapping incident spread in Karmad, scores of villagers started gathering at the police station. In protest against the incident, the villagers even shut their shops on Tuesday. Taking cognisance of the same, Singh reached the spot and diffused the situation with an assurance of taking appropriate action. Finally, the PSI was suspended on Wednesday morning.
