Aurangabad: Divisional commissioner Sunil Kendrekar has asked the civic body to get ready for a review of its garbage collection, segregation and processing. A private agency had been roped in to collect garbage and process it, in the hope that indiscriminate dumping would end. Unsegregated garbage, however, continues to be dumped at the Chikalthana, Harsul Sawangi and Kanchanwadi sites.“The problem with the civic body is that it has failed to win the trust of the people,” an official privy to the process said. Off the record, officials agree that there is tremendous confusion among the people about the manner in which waste has to be disposed at the household and local levels. The high court had earlier ordered that waste collection and transportation be handed over to a private agency. Starting February 4, the agency has begun to work in some zones. However, poor coordination, failure in processing and lack of homework by the municipal corporation has taken a toll on services, which continue to be rather shoddy.Bengaluru based agency P Gopinath Reddy has engaged 96 small vehicles, eight tippers and seven compactors in the zones it has been assigned. As per the agreement, the agency is paid in accordance with the quantity of waste it deals with.Residents of Padegaon and surrounding areas recently protested, blaming the civic body for turning the processing site into a dumping ground in gat number 66/67. The protesters met city police chief Chiranjeev Prasad demanding registration of offences against the civic body. The dumping site also adjoins a prime plot reserved for floating a housing scheme for policemen. Residents highlighted the health risks that people of the area face. The civic body is also being blamed for alleged rampant violations of high court directives.Sources said the garbage matter has now become the most pressing for the civic body to deal with.
