Divisional commissioner takes civic body to task

Sources said that the civic body was all set to launch a drive against the use of plastic from Wednesday.In addition, the civic body has been asked to communicate to its staffers on field not to collect garbage, which is not segregated into dry and wet waste. The details and other relevant information about this committee has also been submitted before the Supreme court. The city generates around 450 to 500 metric tonne of waste on a daily basis. AURANGABAD: The civic administration was left red-faced on Monday when divisional commissioner Sunil Kendrekar reviewed the waste collection process in its jurisdiction and took the authorities to task for failing to deliver on several counts.Kendrekar issued directives to Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to go all-out against the use of plastic bags by taking stringent action against the dealers, suppliers and traders dealing with the sale of the banned product. Sources said that the civic body was all set to launch a drive against the use of plastic from Wednesday.In addition, the civic body has been asked to communicate to its staffers on field not to collect garbage, which is not segregated into dry and wet waste. The city generates around 450 to 500 metric tonne of waste on a daily basis. Though the segregation level has reached 75-80% in some wards, there are a few wards which are still lagging behind in the aforementioned process.Sources said that the meeting started with the understanding of the legal position of the garbage crisis, different litigations pertaining to it, challenges before the civic body staff, available infrastructure at hand and short term and long term plans of the civic administration in dealing with the issue.During the meeting, Kendrekar pulled up field officers of the civic body for claiming to have achieved effective ban on plastic bags and 70 - 80% segregation of collected waste. Kendrekar even paid a visit to the Chikalthana-based plant where he suggested the civic administration to go ahead with its plan of procuring the compacting machine on priority basis and start using the equipment without waiting for the construction of the shade.An officer present at the meeting said that Kendrekar reprimanded the officers for failing to involve citizens for resolving the issue.
