Aurangabad: The Priyadarshini Park of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), which is located near the MGM hospital in Cidco, is being subjected to utter neglect by the civic authorities, reducing it to nothing more than a pool of drain water. Water hyacinth has started to thrive in the pools of the park.Environment experts have expressed their discontent over this development at the park. Incidentally, the 17-acres of land was given by Cidco to the Mahatma Gandhi Mission (MGM) in the 1980s. Over the years, the MGM developed the land into an oxygen hub by consistently planting and growing trees. Eventually, it developed into a proper park.Currently, the park belongs to the AMC and is in a deplorable state. According to environmental activist Kishor Pathak, the MGM’s sewage water is being released into the garden. “The sewage water that is being released is causing hyacinth to grow. One can see the plastic waste that has been dumped into the drain pools,” said Pathak. He added that the park also becomes home to illegal activities like substance-abuse as well as other criminal activities during the evening and night hours. “The area, which was the oxygen hub of the Cidco area until sometime back, is suffering as the trees are being rampantly chopped down,” said Pathak, who is also on the tree authority committee of the local civic body.Incidentally, the AMC has zeroed in on this land for the construction of the Balasaheb Thackeray memorial. Despite protests by environment activists over the cutting of trees for the project, the AMC has reiterated that the memorial will be built on this land. However, the civic body has not been able to pay attention to its upkeep and maintenance. When reached for comments, city engineer Sakharam Panzade, who has recently taken charge of the garden, said that he was not aware of the situation. “I will pay a visit to the site on Wednesday and take the necessary steps,” he said.According to Pravin Suryawanshi, CEO of the MGM’s Medical Centre and Research Institute, the drain water going into the garden is not from any of the buildings of the MGM. “We have our own sewage treatment plant which treats 6 lakh litres of water daily. This water is used for the irrigation of our cricket ground as well as for greenery,” said Suryawanshi. He added that for the last 3-4 years, the handover of the park is given to AMC. “The deforestation in the area is concerning,” he said.
