NASHIK: Thousands of farmers, including tribals, gathered in Nashik city from various parts of the state on Wednesday for the long march to Mumbai, but the state government has initiated last minute efforts to dissuade the organisers from undertaking the march.State water resources minister Girish Mahajan arrived here in the evening to hold parleys with the leaders of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), which is organising the march. The march, which was supposed to start from Nashik by 6pm, was apparently delayed as Mahajan wanted to have a dialogue with the AIKS leaders on the issue. The organisers said the march would leave the city on Thursday at 8am."Farmers need not take out the march to Mumbai as the state government has taken steps to tackle their woes on several fronts. I will hold a meeting with the leaders of the farmers on the issue later in the night," Mahajan said. AIKS leaders confirmed that they have received an invitation from the minister to hold parleys with him. However, the organisers are in no mood to shelve their march as not only thousands of farmers have taken the pains to travel to Nashik but also there is a need to highlight the problems of farmers across the state. The AIKS leaders said that they would not call off their long march till the government takes firm decision on their demands. The state secretary of the AIKS, Ajit Navle, said that during the long march last year Mahajan had taken initiative to negotiate between the government and the farmers."But our demands are yet not been fulfilled. What is the use to hold talks with Mahajan if nothing concrete happens. We are determined go ahead with the march," he said. He said the march will start from Nashik with 40,000 farmers and the number will swell to 80,000 by the time it reaches Mumbai on February 27.
