Congress fields BJP dissenter Subhash Wankhede from Hingoli

The former CM had registered a win by over 80,000 votes during the last Lok Sabha polls despite the ‘Modi wave’. The Congress too was desperate in search of candidate in the wake of withdrawal of Satav from the race. Blaming non-cooperation from a section of Sena camp for his defeat, Wankhede had ditched Shiv Sena and joined BJP.Wankhede, who had defeated senior NCP leader Suryakanta Patil in 2009, could pose a tough challenge in Hingoli Lok Sabha seat.By allotting ticket to Wankhede, Congress tried to encash on the dissent brewing within the BJP camp.

AURANGABAD: In a move that has taken the BJP-Shiv Sena combine by surprise, the Congress on Sunday declared BJP dissenter Subhash Wankhede as its official nominee for the Hingoli Lok Sabha seat even though Wankhede is yet to resign from the saffron party.Wankhede is set to replace Congress’s sitting MP Rajiv Satav, whose re-nomination was in question after he was made in charge of Gujarat state for the upcoming elections.Also, the party on late Saturday night declared state unit chief Ashok Chavan as its candidate for Nanded, putting an end to speculation over nominations for Hingoli and Nanded seats.Wankhede has been voicing strong dislike for Shiv Sena’s Hemant Patil, who has been given ticket by the saffron alliance to contest from Hingoli. Wankhede had contested the last Lok Sabha poll against Satav on Shiv Sena ticket and was defeated by a margin only 1,632 votes. Blaming non-cooperation from a section of Sena camp for his defeat, Wankhede had ditched Shiv Sena and joined BJP.Wankhede, who had defeated senior NCP leader Suryakanta Patil in 2009, could pose a tough challenge in Hingoli Lok Sabha seat.By allotting ticket to Wankhede, Congress tried to encash on the dissent brewing within the BJP camp. The saffron camp could suffer considerable division of votes with the nomination of Wankhede.BJP leader Shirish Boralkar, who is in charge for Hingoli seat, said it was expected move from Wankhede to switch to the other party. “He was desperate to contest the polls and even tried for a Shiv Sena ticket. The Congress too was desperate in search of candidate in the wake of withdrawal of Satav from the race. It was a wrong political move from Wankhede as he has joined a party which will have no future.”Chavan will take on his arch rival and Loha MLA Pratap Patil Chikhalikar of BJP. The former CM had registered a win by over 80,000 votes during the last Lok Sabha polls despite the ‘Modi wave’. Chavan was reportedly unwilling to contest the election as it would have put limitations on his campaigning for the party across the state, but the party top brass insisted for his candidature.
