Aurangabad: Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray may have softened his stance on loan waiver for famers and the upcoming presidential poll, but he is in no mood to back down on the Samruddhi Express highway project. With the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar building pressure and holding multi-party rally to oppose the ongoing land acquisition process for the ambitious project, Thackeray will personally meet the farmers from Aurangabad district on Monday."Uddhav will be listening to the grievances of project-affected farmers from Maliwada on Aurangabad-Nashik Road and Palshi off Aurangabad-Jalna Road. There is growing dissent among farmers against the project and he will be here to express solidarity with them," standing committee member of Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Hrishikesh Khaire said.Referring to his party's recent outreach campaign towards farmers, Sena group leader in AMC Raju Vaidya said farmers have genuine apprehensions about the project as farmers would be losing their fertile land. "He (Thackeray) during his earlier visit to Aurangabad, on May 7, had spoken against the project. This time he will be meeting the farmers and listening to them."Aurangabad, Nashik and other parts of the state, form where the highway is scheduled to pass, have been witnessing protest from farmers. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that the first phase of Samruddhi Express highway, would be completed by 2019 and the entire project will be ready by December 2020.In his reply to the governor's address in the state assembly last year, Fadnavis had said the 793-km-long expressway will be passing through 14 districts. The project has been divided into five stretches and the third stretch is meant for Marathwada.During his visit to Aurangabad early this year in January, Fadnavis had stressed that Samruddhi Express highway would alter the face of Marathwada together with upcoming Dry Port and Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC).A senior BJP leader criticised Sena for its anti-BJP stand, which he said would wither away. "It is but natural for Sena to play politics as it has to ensure its survival. Still, we appeal all parties to support the highway as it will be a boon for development of Marathwada and Vidarbha — the two regions deprived of progress in the past 15 years," he said.
