Aurangabad: Expressing discontent over government's loan waiver announcement, the farmers ' core committee has decided to launch an awareness drive. The drive will focus on informing the farmers about the way government has ditched them on promises, including the ones involving remunerative prices as well as the criteria which eventually bars many farmers from availing loan waiver."The committee will launch fresh awareness campaign from Nashik on July 9 which will culminate in Pune on June 23. In Pune, the core committee will declare its future course of action," said Subhash Lomte, a prominent member of the farmers' core committee. He added that following the loan waiver announcement and other confusing things by the government, the core committee had a meeting in Mumbai on Sunday to discuss the loan waiver declaration."The committee had demanded the government to consider June 30, 2017 as the cut-off date for loan waiver. However, government declared the date as June 2016. Farmers who obtained loans after June 2016, what about them? The government is also silent on its promise regarding remunerative prices for the farm produce," said Lomte."It has been observed that the state government suggests remunerative prices, while the Central government tends to reduce them to half or less. In such cases, the statement of Union finance minister Arun Jaitley — made a day after Maharashtra government announced loan waiver — saying that states declaring loan waivers would have to fend for themselves has added further confusion. Because, 80 per cent of the farm loans are controlled by the Reserve Bank of India while 20 per cent fall under the NABARD purview," he added.Lomte said that farmers are not being entertained by banks for loan waiver. "The government has just made this announcement and didn't come up with specifications for loan waiver. Confusion has prevailed among bankers as well as farmers. One thing is certain that many farmers would be left out of the ambit of the loan waiver," he said."Now, the government has stopped talking to the core committee on any farmer-related issues. Instead, the government is cosying up with NCP and Congress. The core committee would decide its course of action prior to the monsoon session and would force the government to address issues of the farmers in real sense, instead of making announcements," he said.
