Loan waiver due to Shiv Sena push, but BJP taking credit, says Uddhav

"They (BJP) have been putting up posters taking credit of the loan waiver scheme. On June 22, Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu said that seeking a farm loan waiver had become a "fashion". "The loan waiver is a reality today only because the farmers and Shiv Sena joined hands. "We are satisfied with the loan waiver. The Sena chief met some of the people affected by the project during his two-day tour of Aurangabad and Nashik districts.

Aurangabad: Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Monday took a dig at BJP and its state president Raosaheb Danve saying that posters of leaders who abuse farmers should be put up everywhere, instead of banners of political leaders taking credit for the loan waiver announced recently.Thackeray was speaking during his meeting with farmers from Maliwada and Palshi near Aurangabad affected due to the proposed Samruddhi highway project."They (BJP) have been putting up posters taking credit of the loan waiver scheme. On the contrary, it was our party which prevailed upon them to waive the farmers' loans. Both Congress and NCP have nothing to do with it. If any poster should be put up, it should be of leaders who abuse farmers," said Thackeray in Maliwada.Last month, Danve, during a meeting of BJP workers in his hometown Jalna, had criticised tur dal growers saying that farmers continue to "complain" no matter how much produce the government purchases.Earlier, addressing a press conference Aurangabad, Thackeray said the Sena does not want to take credit for the loan waiver. "The loan waiver is a reality today only because the farmers and Shiv Sena joined hands. We do not want credit for this, but at the same time we are happy we could get things done by those who thought loan waiver is a 'fashion'," Thackeray said, in veiled reference to the controversial statements made by the BJP camp. On June 22, Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu said that seeking a farm loan waiver had become a "fashion". Naidu later clarified on his remark after drawing flak from opposition parties.Thackeray also demanded the formation of a separate study group to understand the issues faced by farmers in the wake of the core committee of farmer leaders rejecting the loan waiver offered by the state government. "We are satisfied with the loan waiver. However, only farmers from Marathwada and Vidarbha have benefited while those from districts such as Ahmednagar and Nashik are still reeling under a financial burden," Thackeray said, also demanding the cancellation of police cases against farmers. He mentioned that the study group should include cabinet ministers. "It should not be a study group which keeps on doing its homework," said Thackeray, taking a potshot at Fadnavis who is being criticised by the opposition for his alleged standard response that he is "studying the issue".Thackeray criticised BJP for causing much woe to farmers by implementing demonetisation last year. "Maharashtra received bountiful rainfall last year and farmers had good harvest as well. The cash crunch after demonetisation, however, took away the farmers' profit," he said.Aurangabad, Nashik and few other parts of the state where the proposed Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi will pass through have been witnessing mounting protests from farmers opposing the project. The Sena chief met some of the people affected by the project during his two-day tour of Aurangabad and Nashik districts.
