Beed villagers protest bribery with toy currency

The agitating villagers expressed their anguish over the police behaving arrogantly with them. The police from neighbouring Shivaji Nagar police station was summoned.

Aurangabad: Villagers from Chumbhali in Patoda taluka in Beed district dumped toy currency worth Rs 50 lakh on the Beed zilla parishad (ZP) deputy chief executive officer's table on Monday morning.They were protesting against the block education officer for allegedly turning a blind eye to the rampant malpractices at the zilla parishad run school in their village.The villagers dumped fake notes on deputy chief executive officer Dhanwant Kumar Mali's table stating that they don't have real currency to bribe the authorities hence they are offering Rs 50 lakh in toy currency.Mali told TOI, "The villagers are unhappy with the ZP school management council and their alleged malpractices. An inquiry into the allegations has already been initiated but the education department failed to convey it to them. Hence, the villagers reached my office thinking that the officials are not acting on their complaints."The villagers alleged that the incumbent headmaster of the village based school, in 2016 made a false submission to the education department stating that he has 120 students in his school.A delegation of villagers led by Gorakh Jhend stated that the actual strength was 121, making the school eligible for getting one more teacher appointed."Due to the false submission, not only did the ZP school and its students suffer but also private schools around the village benefited," Jhend added.Villagers allege that block education officer as well as other officers from the zilla parishad has been turning a blind eye to their needs including basic infrastructure, for want of bribes.In a list of allegations the villagers stated that some authorities are helping a select few ineligible persons avail the benefits of government schemes including the Prime Minister's Housing Scheme.Jhend said, "For every minor thing, the government officials are asking money."The incident did not go down well with ZP authorities.
