Now, cops get training in answering questions from legislature members

But most of the times, due to over-consciousness, they end up providing huge amount of irrelevant data, along with the actual reply. "The training involves giving examples of errors committed by policemen in the past and how these mistakes can be avoided.The policemen are also being briefed on the entire process involving the LAQs.

done...Aurangabad: The police officers who are to give written replies to the legislative assembly questions (LAQs) on behalf of their respective police units are being trained in replying to such questions.The move is being seen as an attempt to reduce the incidents of friction between legislative assembly members and the authorities that usually happen during assembly sessions when the legislative assembly/council members express unhappiness over the replies they receive.The winter sessions of the state assembly is scheduled to start in Nagpur on December 11.Recently, the police authorities have made it mandatory for a handful of officers to undergo the crash course which focuses on providing factually correct reply and to the point data by understanding the question.The syllabus and pattern for the course has been decided by the office of the director general of police. The participants are being trained to understand the spirit of the questions posed by the member of the legislative council and assembly, the language to be used and presentation of facts in their replies.Confirming that this is for the first time that the police personnel are being trained in replying to the LAQs, IG (law and order) Prabhat Kumar told TOI, "Basically the training is all about understanding the tone and tenor of the question. We are making the policemen understand the spirit of the question and how the questions are to be replied in the most relevant manner.""We are focusing on training them in giving crisp replies with very relevant, to the point and necessary data. This will save precious time of the two houses," Kumar said.An officer at the DGP's office said, "The policemen take the job of replying to the LAQs very seriously and it is worth appreciation. But most of the times, due to over-consciousness, they end up providing huge amount of irrelevant data, along with the actual reply."The training involves giving examples of errors committed by policemen in the past and how these mistakes can be avoided.The policemen are also being briefed on the entire process involving the LAQs."With the government launching a dedicated website a couple of years ago, enabling members of the legislative council/assembly to send questions and move motions online, things have started moving at a rapid pace. The training is aimed at making the policemen catch up and simultaneously become flawless in their replies, leaving any scope for criticism," said an officer with the rank of additional director general of police.
