Dalit man pushes ailing wife into river before jumping to death

Shahjahanpur: In a shocking incident, a 25-year-old Dalit man pushed his wife, a TB patient, into the Gomti river and later jumped into the river in Khuthar area of Shahjahanpur on Wednesday evening. The couple was accompanied by Rajesh’s cousin Sarvan Kumar, who witnessed that the entire incident and is still in shock. While police have managed to recover the woman’s body, the man’s body is yet to be found. His wife was undergoing ayurvedic treatment for tuberculosis and he was not able to bear the cost of the treatment which pushed him to take the extreme step. Officials said that the couple got married a year ago and soon after the man found out about his wife’s illness.Rajesh Kumar, son of Babu Ram, a resident of Saidapur village in Banda block, was returning from Khuthar with his wife Nanki Devi (20) after her routine check-up. The couple was accompanied by Rajesh’s cousin Sarvan Kumar, who witnessed that the entire incident and is still in shock. “Sarvan has told us that the couple was extremely unhappy about something and that he had no idea that they will take such an extreme step,” said an official.When the trio reached near Gomti bridge in Majahria village on Khuthar Banda road, Rajesh pushed his wife into the river and then himself took a. Shocked by the development, Sarvan cried for help and even called up Rajesh’s father to tell him about the horrific incident.Soon, a local diver came to the spot and jumped into the river and managed to find the body of Nanki Devi after about half hour of struggling. Later, however, he refused to jump into the river again as he was reportedly scared.Later in the day, police roped in professional divers but despite sustained efforts from them, they could not find Rajesh’s body. “Even the locals helped us but we could not find the man’s body,” said the official.“My brother was upset because he was not able to bear the cost of treatment of his wife. He jumped into the river after pushing his wife and ended his life,” a crying Sarvan told reporters.Station officer of Khuthar police station, Birija Ram said, “The man belonged to the Dalit community and was very poor. We have deployed officials and divers to search for the body.”
