Man sets wife afire for opposing sale of land, arrested

Police have arrested Amar Singh while the others are absconding.According to police, deceased Nanhi Devi, a native of Badaun’s Dataganj town, was married to Amar Singh, who is a farmer and resident of Dalpatpur village under Bhamora police station. Of the total 20 bigha of ancestral land he inherited, he had sold 12 bigha to his friend. On the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, a drunk Singh tried to persuade his wife for selling the remaining eight bigha to his friend.

According to police, the man was “helped” by his two sisters and two other relatives. An FIR has been lodged against five persons. Around 4 am, when his wife refused to agree, he started thrashing her. When she fainted, he poured kerosene over her body and set her on fire. Singh’s two sisters, Pushpa and Manju with their husbands Ravindra Singh and Pramod, respectively stood watching Singh set his wife on fire and did nothing to save her.“Some neighbour informed us about the incident. When we reached the spot, we found Singh, who was drunk. We arrested him while the other four are absconding,” police added.Bhamora station house officer Vijay Pratap Singh said, “Following the complaint filed by deceased’s younger brother Mohar Singh, we have lodged an FIR against Amar Singh and four others under the IPC sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) and 34 (where many persons do a thing in furtherance of their common intention) of IPC. Singh has been sent to jail and rest of the accused will be nabbed soon.”
