SHAHJAHANPUR: A sharpshooter, Malak Singh alias Raju , who carried a reward of Rs 30,000 on his head, was arrested after a brief gun battle between his gang and Lakhimpur Kheri police late on Thursday night. Singh was wanted in connection with the Adab Khan murder case. A local criminal, Mohammed Meeraz, had given Singh a Rs 4-lakh contract to kill Khan, a businessman.Singh and his aides executed the murder on May 29, 2015. All the accused in this case, barring Singh, were arrested and they are undergoing trial in court.According to police, a SWAT team of police received a tip-off on Thursday night that three armed persons on a bike were planning to commit a crime in a mango orchard near Sethghat temple under the jurisdiction of Lakhimpur Kotwali police station. A joint operation by SWAT team and local police was immediately initiated on the instructions of SP S Chinnapa. Two teams raided the mango orchard and on spotting the criminals, asked them to surrender. In response, criminals opened fire and police returned fire. The gun battle went on for almost half an hour. During the exchange of fire, two of Singh’s aides managed to flee but Singh was caught.He was later identified as Malak Singh. Police have booked him under the Arms Act and IPC section 307 (attempt to murder). He was sent to the district jail on Friday evening.Station officer of Kotwali police station Ashok Pandey said, “We have arrested a contract killer Malak Singh alias Raju. He was wanted in the Adab murder case and carried a reward of Rs 30,000.”
