From the very first day of her marriage, her husband and in-laws subjected her to cruelty for bringing insufficient dowry.According to Nazia’s father, Zahruddin, a resident of Tigadi locality in Neuria town, he has just 0.75 acre agricultural land. To make ends meet and support his family, he also works as a daily wager from time to time.“My daughter was married to Arif Ahmad, a marginal farmer and a resident of Thera Khabbarpur locality in the same town, just 21 days ago. I had given Rs 1 lakh cash in the marriage, hoping my daughter Nazia would have a happy married life. I had to borrow money at heavy interest rate for giving dowry to Ahmad’s family, but in vain,” said Zahruddin.From the very first day of the marriage, Nazia was physically tortured, he claimed. They then attacked her with acid that was kept in the toilet for cleaning, he alleged.Somehow, Nazia managed to flee from Ahmad’s house and reached her parental home where she narrated her ordeal to her father. “My daughter would have been killed had she not fled,” said ZahruddinStation house officer of Neuria police station Ravindra Kumar Verma said an FIR had been lodge against six persons — Nazia’s husband Arif Ahmad, his elder brother Talib Ahmad, his father Riaz Ahmad, his mother Khairan Begum and his two unmarried sisters Shama and Nisha under IPC section 498A (subjecting a woman to cruelty by husband or his relatives), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 506 (criminal intimidation) in addition to provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
