Bareilly: In a novel initiative, Bareilly district administration is planning to deliver sanitary napkins at the door steps of rural women to promote menstrual hygiene among them under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). As many as 25 self-help groups (SHG) will deliver the napkins in far flung rural areas. The volunteers were given marketing tips and other required training on Monday at Vikas Bhavan.Chief development officer (CDO) Satendra Kumar said that the drive would help a lot of village women. Administration will provide sanitary napkins to SHGs on comparatively very low rates than branded ones available in the market.“Using sanitary napkins instead of piece of cloth will definitely give a better hygienic option to women. Besides, with selling sanitary napkins in villages, women of SHG will be able to earn with dignity. SHGs will be provided a pack of six sanitary napkins on a very low cost of Rs 16.5 which they further sell in Rs 20 only,” CDO said.“In the market a pack of six sanitary napkin pads weighing 8 gram each costs from Rs 60 to 80. The quality of napkins being provided by the Gram Panchayat Udyog, which is again run by women groups, is as good as any other sanitary napkins available in the market. Once we develop market among comparatively downtrodden rural women, we will be able to setup our own units to reduce napkin price,” said SHG’s workers after attending workshop at Vikas Bhavan.Meanwhile, CDO said that their aim is to provide a pack of sanitary napkins to village women in Rs 10 for which they are working on all aspects from manufacturing to marketing.While reacting on administration’s drive, one Krati Singh, director of Sarv Suraksha Foundation, said that administration’s drive is commendable.
