PTR staff conduct raids to curb sale of sal tree buds

Pilibhit: With the onset of monsoon, a large number of villagers living near Pilibhit Tiger Reserve enter the core forest area for collecting “katarua” (buds of sal tree) as well as “dharti ke phool” (wild mushroom). They claimed they had purchased katarua from Pilibhit APMC. The reserve’s staff has also started conducting raids against sellers and buyers of katarua.“As per the law of tiger reserve, any intrusion in forest area without a valid permission of competent forest authority or collection of any forest produce is a cognizable offence under the Wildlife Protection Act,” said Kumar.He said on Saturday, five katarua sellers were nabbed from near Pilibhit railway station. Both katarua and wild mushrooms fetch a good price in the retail market at Rs 300 and Rs 100, respectively.Unable to prevent people from infiltrating into the forest, deputy director of PTR Adarsh Kumar has written to secretaries of Pilibhit and Puranpur Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees (APMC) to prohibit any trading of katarua on their campuses.
