BAREILLY: The city will finally get its first sewage treatment plant as Bareilly Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently received the first installment of around Rs 14 crore for setting up an STP in Sarai Tulfi locality of the city.According to sources at BMC, the upcoming treatment plant will have a capacity of 35 million litres per day (mld). It will be set up in an area spanning 2.5 hectares. The civic body also proposes to construct three more sewage treatment plants in different localities — in Subhash Nagar, Swaley Nagar and Bisalpur road. The total cost of setting up the four STPs is estimated at Rs 88 crore.Speaking with TOI, executive engineer in BMC's water department, Sanjay Kumar, said, “A sum of around Rs 14 crore was recently released by the state government as first installment for the STP project which has a total estimated budget of around Rs 88.61 crore. It has been decided that the sewage treatment plant will initially be built in Sarai Tulfi area of the city. The plant is expected to have a capacity of processing around 35 million litres a day."The executive engineer added, “We had sent the detailed project report for the Sarai Tulfi STP in March this year and the same was approved then. We were waiting for the required resources to take up the construction work. The first installment has now been received and work will soon commence.”According to Bareilly Municipal Corporation officials, with the construction of a sewage treatment plant in the city, discharge from households and commercial establishments into drains will first be directed into the treatment plants. This will prevent sewage from directly entering water bodies as the drain water will be treated in the plant before being released into rivers. It is important to set up an STP as the waste which is discharged into drains leads chokes them, leading to waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas, they added.Apart from Sarai Tulfi, detailed project reports of three more sewage treatment plants at Swaley Nagar, Bisalpur road and Shubhash Nagar have also been sent to the state government. The civic body is awaiting funds’ release to begin work there. These areas have been shortlisted as they face waterlogging problems frequently, officials said.
