Woman burnt alive by husband, in-laws for dowry

Bareilly: A 23-year-old woman was allegedly burnt alive by her husband and in-laws for dowry at the city’s Basant Vihar locality on Sunday morning. But her husband and in-laws were still unhappy and kept demanding Rs 20 lakh in dowry. The woman has sustained more than 95% burn injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.The victim Jyoti Yadav had married Nirjesh Kumar Yadav, 24, on April 18 this year. I sold my crop and gave Rs 5 lakh on July 2 to save the marriage. Police have booked four people, including the husband, in the crime.

The woman has sustained more than 95% burn injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.The victim Jyoti Yadav had married Nirjesh Kumar Yadav, 24, on April 18 this year. Nirjesh is a BSc final year student.Jyoti’s father, Rajveer Singh Yadav, said, “I had spent around Rs 40 lakh in the wedding, gifted gold and other items to my daughter. But her husband and in-laws were still unhappy and kept demanding Rs 20 lakh in dowry. They used to also torture her. On July 1, Nirjesh had even tried to strangle Jyoti after which she came to our house. I sold my crop and gave Rs 5 lakh on July 2 to save the marriage. But they burned my daughter after pouring petrol on her around 6 am on Sunday.”Rajveer is a native of Moradabad’s Karsara area. Rakesh Yadav, a local BJP worker and uncle of Jyoti, said, “She has sustained more than 95% burn injuries and her condition is critical.”Sanjay Singh, station house officer, Izzatnagar police station, said, “An FIR has been lodged against Nirjesh, his father Dushyant, mother Jaya and sister Kushboo under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) and 498 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and also relevant sections of the Dowry Prevention Act. The woman had recorded her statement in front of a magistrate on Sunday morning. We are probing the matter. The accused will be arrested soon.”
