Now, UP PWD sets October deadline to repair rain-hit roads

Bareilly: The Public Works Department (PWD) is preparing a detailed action plan for repairing roads damaged due to rains this monsoon. Head of Public Works Department, VK Singh, said, “Earlier, PWD had organized a 10-day drive to check condition of roads in the state. A decision to this effect was taken at a recent meeting in which deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya directed senior department officials to start repair work on roads across the state.Officials said that the department has set October as its deadline to complete the repair work. These included national highways, state highways, major district roads and roads connecting rural areas. Region-wise reports along with pictures of roads will be sent to the headquarters following which repair work will be taken up.”According to sources, nearly 85,000 kilometers of roads have been declared pothole-free by PWD between 2017-18.

These included national highways, state highways, major district roads and roads connecting rural areas. The department is currently putting together reports on condition of these roads after which the repair work will be started.”Chief engineer with PWD, Bareilly, Rakesh Rajwanshi, said, “The departmental officials were earlier assigned duties to inspect roads and produce detailed reports before the headquarters at the earliest. We are currently in the process of gathering details of stretches damaged due to rains. Region-wise reports along with pictures of roads will be sent to the headquarters following which repair work will be taken up.”According to sources, nearly 85,000 kilometers of roads have been declared pothole-free by PWD between 2017-18. Moreover, during the special inspection, the department had set a target to conduct inspections of around 1.4 lakh roads.The BJP government had inherited 1.21 lakh kilometers of potholed roads from the previous dispensation, deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya had earlier told TOI.The PWD had observed a 10-day drive (June 26 till July 6) to check condition of roads across the state in wake of monsoon and identify the damaged, potholed stretches. Officials were directed to make personal visits in order to review the situation in their respective divisions.
