Bareilly: The Uttar Pradesh Minorities Commission has sent a two-member committee to Bareilly to investigate the fatwa issued by Dargah Aala Hazrat clerics against Nida Khan, a triple talaq victim and anti-triple talaq crusader. The fatwa issued on Monday had called for her social boycott by other members of the community. Meanwhile, state irrigation minister Dharampal Singh said he would take up Khan’s case with PM Narendra Modi when the latter arrives in Shahjahanpur for his rally on July 21. On Tuesday, Khan had written to National Human Rights Commission against the fatwa and had slammed clerics for trying to “suppress” a woman fighting for her rights.Kunwar Iqbal Haider, member, UP Minorities Commission told TOI, “We have taken suo motu cognizance of the entire incident. We will check the actual position and will talk to Khan, clerics and the administration, after which we will decide on our course of action and will submit a report to the government to take appropriate action in the matter.” Apart from Haider, the other member in the committee is Rumana Siddiqui. The team was on its way to Bareilly at the time of filing of this report.Meanwhile, commenting on the fatwa issued to Khan, Dharampal Singh while addressing the media here said, “I condemn the entire incident but pay my respects to Khan for her courage. As PM Narendra Modi believes in ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas’, I will raise the matter of Khan with him when he comes to Shahjahanpur for his rally on July 21.”Asked whether any action would be taken against the clerics for passing the fatwa, Singh said, “Action will be taken against those who work to create friction in society. If I get a written complaint, I will take strict action.”Though the copy of the written fatwa uses the name ‘Hinda’ instead of ‘Nida’, a cleric told media persons on Monday that the fatwa was issued for Nida. Following the fatwa, Khan has sent a letter to NHRC.Khan said, “The government should take strict action against clerics who have been involved in issuing of fatwa and have asked the community to boycott me. The fatwa is not only a violation of my human rights but also a conspiracy to incite the public against me. If any woman in future raises her voice to fight for her rights, the clerics will pass another fatwa to scare her. It needs to be stopped.”Khan was divorced by her husband, Sheeran Raza Khan, who is from the family of the head of Aala Hazrat, through instant triple talaq in 2016. She took the matter to the civil court and said that she had suffered a miscarriage after being assaulted by her husband in 2015. Nida has been highlighting the plight of triple talaq and nikah halala victims since then. She said, “I am currently pursuing LLB as victims of triple talaq and domestic violence can get justice only through courts. My mission is to fight for such women.”
