Bareilly: Police sent fourth accused in the Sambhal gangrape and murder case – Kumarpal, who was arrested near Sambhal road – to jail on Thursday. Kumarpal and four other accused had allegedly gangraped a 35-year-old woman on July 14 and dragged her to a nearby temple where they burnt her alive. After the incident grabbed national headlines, the state government suspended superintendent of police RM Bharadwaj. The new district police chief, Yamuna Prasad, said that only the main accused, Mahaveer, was at large and he would be arrested soon.Rajpura police station house officer Anil Kumar said, “Acting on a tip-off, we arrested the accused from Sambhal road when he was about to board a vehicle. He was produced in court and sent to jail. Now, only one main accused Mahaveer is on the run. Three teams have been deployed to arrest him.”Prasad said that a police picket had been deployed at the village near the deceased woman’s house.“Since the house is located in a desolate place, policemen have been instructed to patrol the area. We are also keeping a tab on the movements of the families of the accused who live in the same village,” the SP said.The main accused, Mahaveer, is a distant cousin of the deceased woman’s husband. He had barged into her house on July 14 along with his four accomplices around 2:30 am when she was sleeping with her 9-year-old daughter. The woman’s husband works as a labourer in Ghaziabad.All five accused reportedly took turns to rape her and left the scene threatening to kill her if she opened her mouth. Minutes after the incident, the victim had made a phone call to her cousin narrating the whole incident.However, all the accused returned to her house after some time and dragged the woman to a nearby temple where they burnt her alive at a yagyashala.
