Fever death toll rises to 31 in Bareilly, health department starts mass radical treatment

BAREILLY: The death toll due to fever in rural areas of Bareilly increased to 31 on Wednesday after a two-and-a-half-year-old girl, a two-month-old boy, a two-year-old girl and a 60-year-old man in Majhgavan block died. Bhuri Devi, village head of Kandharpur, said, “The two-and-a-half-year old girl, Kamlesh, daughter of Pancham Lal , died due to fever. The team has also asked us to start mass radical treatment of patients at the earliest. The fever-related deaths have been confirmed by village heads while the health department has claimed that only 10 people have lost their lives so far. Eight people have died because of fever in the past fortnight.”Uttar Pradesh director general , health, Dr Padmakar Singh, said, “The team from Lucknow is yet to send its report.

The fever-related deaths have been confirmed by village heads while the health department has claimed that only 10 people have lost their lives so far. A team from the state capital has been sent to the district to assess the gravity of the situation.Chief medical officer (CMO), Dr Vineet Shukla, said, “The team from Lucknow has recommended outdoor and indoor spraying of anti-larvae powder in affected villages. Mass radical treatment of patients have also been started.”When TOI had earlier checked with village heads about casualties in their areas, wide gaps were found between the total death toll in the district and the health department figures.The situation is particularly bad in Majhgavan block which has witnessed most casualties. Bhuri Devi, village head of Kandharpur, said, “The two-and-a-half-year old girl, Kamlesh, daughter of Pancham Lal , died due to fever. The illness had also claimed the life of her mother, Kushma Devi, on September 2. Another child, two-month-old Anmol, son of Jaipal, died of fever and another two-year-old girl Rohini, daughter of Kunwarpal, succumbed to the illness on Wednesday. The village has nearly 200 families and in most of the houses there is at least one person who is suffering from fever.”Mahendra Saxena, whose wife Saroj is the village head of Jaitpur Sharifpur in Majhgavan block, said, “Mallu Saifi (60), son of Mohammed Saifi, died due to fever on Wednesday. No health team has come to our village as yet.”Bhagwan Das, head of Behta Bujurg village in the block, said, “The highest number of deaths has taken place in our village. Eight people have died because of fever in the past fortnight.”Uttar Pradesh director general , health, Dr Padmakar Singh, said, “The team from Lucknow is yet to send its report. The CMO has confirmed 10 fever-related deaths so far. The department is taking all precautions. Spraying of anti-larvae and fogging is being regularly conducted.”“We have begun indoor spraying of anti-larvae in affected villages from Wednesday following recommendations by the Lucknow team, which is led by Dr RK Mishra, joint director, vector-borne diseases. The team has also asked us to start mass radical treatment of patients at the earliest. We are coordinating with other departments to tackle waterlogging in localities and ensure safe and potable drinking water,” said Dr Shukla.
