Bareilly: Senior superintendent of police Muniraj G has set up an inquiry into an alleged case of “mistaken identity” where a man, Sabir Qureshi, who has been arrested, was wrongfully arrested and forced by police to confess to a crime he never committed.The man, Sabir Qureshi, who shares his name with a criminal, Sabir Mansuri, was arrested from CB Ganj area on September 6 in connection with a factoryloot case.“I have asked superintendent of police (crime) Ramesh Kumar Bhartiya to conduct and inquiry into the case. He will give me a report within three days. If any foul play is found, I will take appropriate action against SHO,” the SSP said.When asked, CB Ganj police station house officer Srikant Dwivedi insisted he had arrested the right man and the accused had also confessed to his crime.The SHO claimed that the accused’s family members are cleverly trying to frame a ragpicker in the town who shares the same name. “We have cross-checked and Sabir Mansuri, the ragpicker, has no criminal record,” he told TOI. Qureshi’s elder brother, Bhura, however, said he had a voice recording of policemen who admitted that they had arrested a wrong man. He said he had submitted the recording to the SSP who ordered a probe.“On September 6, policemen came at our house and nabbed my brother. When I asked them the reason, they abused me and left. Later, when my cousin called them up, they admitted they had arrested the wrong man. Thankfully, my cousin had recorded the conversation,”Bhura said. According to the local police, a security guard was brutally beaten up on June 30 by three accused who looted a private factory. The guard later died. Later, when two persons were arrested in the case, they revealed the involvement of their third associate, Sabir Qureshi.“Later, we found four different loot cases were registered against Qureshi at our police station,” SHO Dwivedi said.
