Pilibhit: A 26-year-old woman committed suicide at Sai Dham colony in Pilibhit city on Friday after the man she was to marry and his family members had allegedly called off the wedding over dowry demands. Family members of the deceased, Kirti Suman, also said that she took the extreme step after learning about her former fiancé’s wedding to another woman recently. Police have recovered a suicide note in which she has blamed the accused man of mentally harassing her. An FIR has been registered against the accused and his family members.“Suman was engaged to one Arvind Kumar, who is currently posted as an assistant engineer in Sonbhadra district, on February 25 last year. Soon after the ceremony, Arvind and his family members said that a date for the wedding would only be decided when the woman’s family gives them a luxury car, gold and Rs 10 lakh in cash,” said Jaiprakash Das, the victim’s cousin brother.The woman’s father, Ram Pratap, the manager of an Uttarakhand-based bank, and her brother Satendra Singh, branch manager of the Canara Bank in Noida, had negotiated with Arvind’s family over the past several months but to little avail. “Arvind had later also threatened to kill Kirti and her brother if they pursued the matter further,” said Das.Station house officer of Pilibhit Kotwali, K P Singh, said, “An FIR has been lodged against Arvind, his father Bachani Lal, mother Ramwati, brother Dharmendra Kumar and other members of the family under IPC section 306 (abetment to suicide). The accused would be arrested at the earliest.”
