Residents of Azam’s locality pelt stones at UPPCL teams

Rampur: Residents of Lala ka Neem near planetarium, where Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan also resides, allegedly pelted stones at Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) vigilance teams and policemen accompanying them when they raided houses in the locality to check power theft on Monday afternoon.The agitating residents also vandalised UPPCL vehicles, protesting against the raids, which were carried out jointly by two vigilance teams from Moradabad and Amroha. However, no casualty was reported.An FIR was registered against unidentified people for rioting and under various other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Ganj police station here.Archana Singh, in charge of the vigilance team, said, “In view of rampant power theft, UPPCL teams conducted raids in the locality and found eight households using illegal power connections. FIRs were lodged against them at the Ganj police station.”Speaking with TOI, Qila area sub divisional officer Pradeep Kumar Yadav said, “When vigilance officials and policemen raided the locality, residents came out of their houses in protest and pelted stones at the officials and policemen.”Ganj kotwali SHO Vidhut Goyal said, “We will identify offenders after watching CCTV recordings, and they will be arrested soon and sent to jail.”
