Three-day-old infant of rape survivour dies, probe ordered

Bareilly: Three days after a 17-year old rape survivor gave birth to a girl, the infant died on Sunday night in Meerganj area of Bareilly. While the girl’s family said that the child had died of illness, police, suspecting foul play, have sent the body for post mortem.The survivour had allegedly been raped by a 33-year-old neighbour. The accused, who was arrested under section 376 (rape) of the IPC and sections of the POCSO Act, has denied raping the girl and fathering the child. An FIR was lodged and the accused was arrested and sent to jail in the same month. As of now, we have sent the body for post-mortem to find out the cause of death.

Already seven-months pregnant, she informed her family of the incident in August. An FIR was lodged and the accused was arrested and sent to jail in the same month. The minor gave birth on October 12.The girl’s brother said, “On October 12, my sister gave birth to a girl, but the child died of an illness on Sunday night.”Superintendent of police (SP rural), Satish Kumar, said, “The survivour’s girl was a clue in the rape case. The accused, who was arrested under section 376 (rape) of the IPC and sections of the POCSO Act, has denied raping the girl and fathering the child. If the need arises, we will conduct a DNA test to see if his claim is true. As of now, we have sent the body for post-mortem to find out the cause of death. If the report reveals any foul play, we will take appropriate action.”The girl’s brother added, “My sister was alone in the house when she was raped by our neighbour Abhas Singh Chauhan, who works as daily wage labourer. He is married, with four kids.”
