Shahjahanpur: Panic has gripped over a dozen villages after a tiger was spotted in Biharipur farmhouse near Maheshpur range of South Kheri forest division. Farm workers have refused to work, affecting harvesting of sugarcane. These villages are about 7-8 km from Mohammadi town in Lakhimpur Kheri district.Divisional forest officer, North Kheri, Anil Patel, who is also looking after South Kheri forest division in the absence of DFO, south Sameer Kumar, told TOI that he has instructed the Maheshpur forest ranger to advice farmers to start harvesting cane from the village-end and move towards the forest-end. He has also asked the range officer to arrange for lights around the fields at night where cane is to be harvested the next day. The lights will keep tigers away, he added.“We are also planning to install motion sensor camera traps to study animal behaviour in the area. We will also take the assistance from World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) for the purpose,” said Patel.A local resident, Sukhpreet Singh, told TOI, “We are not at all convinced by the steps taken by the forest department as they have not done anything to identify the reasons why tigers stray into our area. They have not done anything to find out how many tigers are lurking about here. There are over a dozen of villages in this area and it looks like that there are more than three tigers hiding amid the sugarcane fields here.”With the Chaltua incident still fresh in their minds, villagers near Maheshpur range are wondering what to do if the tiger attacks them. Residents of Chaltua situated in Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary under Dudhwa Tiger Reserve had mowed down a tigress that had attacked a villager earlier and beaten it to death on November 4. Six people were booked for killing the tigress.Earlier in August, 80 villagers of Ayodhyapur, near Maheshpur range, were booked by the forest department after they had allegedly torched the range office following a tiger attack on a resident.
