Bareilly: In a bid to ensure road safety, the city’s traffic police, on Monday, launched a drive against vehicles without proper lights. The drive assumes significance as it comes ahead of winter months when large number of accidents due to the winter fog are reported .Around 1000 vehicles including public transports— autorickshaws, e-rickshaws — and other vehicles, including tractor-trolleys and trucks, were checked during the drive and the drivers of vehicles with no proper lights were given reflective tapes in order to avoid road accidents. As per the traffic officials, the drive was carried out in the outskirts if the city along with the suburbs.“Under the month-long road safety drive, the department had conducted the enforcement drive to check the violation of traffic rules. With winters approaching, it was important to check vehicles with proper functioning lights installed as lacking these results in road accidents. The vehicle drivers were distributed reflective tapes during the inspection which they were made to paste on their vehicles on the spot. Besides, those vehicles which lacked working lights, drivers were instructed to get them repaired,” said superintendent of police (traffic) Subhash Gangwar.“The reflective tapes prove to be very helpful as they minimise the risk of road accidents in dark by alerting road users about the presence of vehicle ahead. The reflectors (red, white and yellow) were distributed by traffic police free of cost to the drivers of both commercial and public transport vehicles,” added Gangwar. The traffic police officials also said the drivers on the roads were stopped and made aware regarding the ongoing road safety month and its purpose. The drivers were instructed to follow traffic rules and a booklet listing various traffic rules, regulations and information regarding penalties imposed on violation of the rules was also distributed among the drivers. Some stickers displaying ‘follow traffic rules’ were also pasted at the rear side of autos and taxis.“We have just began with the enforcement drive and the department will be carrying out several drives in the city to check on violation while public meetings, awareness campaigns will also be organised in schools and public places to sensitise people about traffic norms during the road-safety month,” said traffic inspector, JN Asthana.
