Health department asks state to appoint more doctors in malaria-affected blocks

BAREILLY: As the cases of deadly plasmodium falciparum (PF) malaria continue to be reported from Bareilly , chief medical officer has written to state government to demand appointment of doctors in affected blocks. Officials said the affected blocks have only two doctors each against the requirement of six in each block.Dr Vineet Shukla, chief medical superintendent, said, “I have written to director general (health) to appoint more doctors in malaria-affected blocks. We have been continuously doing active surveillance of malaria to end the problem.”The number of PF cases has reduced but four to five cases are being reported every day from the district. The cases are being reported from Majhgavan, Ramnagar and Bhamora. An official said that Bhamora and Ramnagar blocks have two doctors each while six to eight doctors are needed in each block. According to health department, 13,828 cases of PF and 19,636 cases of plasmodium vivax (PV) malaria have been reported in the district in the past two-and-a-half months.Meanwhile, the health department has received a budget of Rs 3.50 lakh to pay labourers for indoor spraying of DDT. Sources said the health department had been conducting indoor spraying with pyrethrum in villages. The department has a target of spraying DDT in 56 highly sensitive villages. As indoor spraying of DDT is a time-consuming process, the health department needs more labourers to carry out the work. It needs the funds from the state to pay the labourers, who will work on a daily-wage basis.“The lifespan of a mosquito is considered to be 28 to 32 days. If no fresh PF case is reported from a given area in the next 32 days, it will be assumed that the area has no mosquito with PF parasite,” said the official.
