Bareilly: The Bareilly Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to launch a crackdown on dairy owners discharging waste material into drains and pits. Erring dairy owners would be fined ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000, warned officials.According to BMC officials, when discharged into drains and pits, dairy waste products such as cow dung, fodder and by-products of dairy foods and beverages clog sewers and sewage-mixed water floods streets, which not only produces stench, but are a potential threat to health.According to BMC records, there are nearly 400 dairies operating within the civic body’s limit. “BMC is chalking out a plan to identify erring dairy owners to initiate action against them,” said officials.BMC commissioner Rajesh Kumar Shrivastava told TOI, “BMC has received several complaints from residents about dairy owners discharging wastes into drains. Even BMC sanitation workers have complained about rampant discharge of cow dung into drains. This has resulted in clogging of several drains and pits, and the problem of waterlogging has become very common in the city.”“To deal with the situation and to ensure that dairy wastes are not discharged into drains, BMC will launch a random crackdown on erring dairy owners and fined them,” added Shrivastava.Under the BMC health department, several teams of sanitation inspectors have been formed to crackdown on erring dairy owners.BMC sanitation inspector Deepak Kumar told TOI, “According to BMC norms, dairy owners are required to collect cow dung and other waste material at one place and dump it at nearby dumping site. The civic body will lift the wastes from that site and dump it at the landfill site. But, it has been observed that operators/owners discharge cattle wastes into drains that choke drains.”Imran, an Azam Nagar-based dairy operator, said, “We are aware that discharging of wastes into drains clogs it. We strictly follow civic body’s guidelines and ensure that the waste is dumped at the nearby dumping site regularly.”
