The counselling helped students and we will keep organising such sessions in the future.” On Thursday, he conducted counselling of nearly 100 students of Class IX and XI at Alma Mater School.

BAREILLY: As the cases of anxiety, depression and panic attacks are rising among teenagers, a city-based counselling psychologist has started free counselling sessions for students of Classes IX to XII in private schools of the city.Dr Chakshu Mishra, counselling psychologist, said, “In my clinic, I usually come across common cases of anxiety, depression, stress and panic attacks among schoolchildren. I have treated nearly 150 such students in the past two years. Most common cases of anxiety among teenaged students come from their worry to score not even less than 1% than the expected marks. In few cases, students develop writing cramp due to anxiety. The other category is of those students who are preparing for competitive exams. They get depressed after they are unable to crack competitions. We have also come across cases where students get panic attacks when they are unable to choose their career. Few cases of psychosomatic were also detected.”According to Mishra, as such cases are rising among students and many children do not seek experts’ help, he decided to approach city-based schools to help students in dealing with common problems.“Four prominent schools have given me permission to conduct free counselling sessions for the students of Classes IX to XII. I will approach other schools as well. At first, I discuss with students about problems, causes, symptoms and measures to be taken. If they complain of a problem, I hold separate session with them,” said Mishra. On Thursday, he conducted counselling of nearly 100 students of Class IX and XI at Alma Mater School. The students of Classes X and XII could not participate as they were appearing for pre-board exams.Rajeev Dhingra, chairperson, Alma Mater School, said, “Every second student suffers from anxiety, stress or depression. Such students lack confidence. As their parents are busy in their lives, we try to make students understand that they should be content with their marks, because they scored it according to their preparations. However, few students are under pressure from family and friends. The counselling helped students and we will keep organising such sessions in the future.”
