Days after killing toddler, wolves strike again, injure two kids in Sambhal

Bareilly: Days after a pack of wolves had killed and eaten a two-and-a-half-year-old boy in Sambhal district, two more children sustained serious injuries after being attacked by the animals on Thursday. The incident occurred at Kashipur village under Gunnaur police station of Sambhal. The children were rescued by villagers working in nearby fields and taken to the community health centre. Doctors referred them to a higher facility in Aligarh.This is the third attack by wolves in the region.The attacks have taken the forest department by surprise as there are no known previous incidents. According to divisional forest officer, DK Chaturvedi, “All these incidents occurred in the villages located on the banks of Ganga. Evidence we have collected suggests that wolves are behind these attacks. These animals roam in packs in river basins and target only small children.” The DFO believes that the killer pack comprises four wolves. Since December 30, the pack has killed two children, including a seven-year-old girl.“Since, we have very limited resources to curb the menace, we have informed our senior officials in Lucknow. Soon, a team of experts will arrive to cage the wolves. Meanwhile, we have alerted villagers, warning them to keep a close eye on their children and ensure they do not go out alone.”Giving details of the latest attack, station house officer of Gunnaur Devesh Singh said the victims, Prashant, 4, and Jaswant, 2, were siblings.“Both had accompanied their mother, Meera, to the cane fields. They were playing when a pack of wolves attacked them and dragged them into the cane fields. On hearing their screams, Meera raised an alarm. Her husband, Indrapal, and other farmers working in nearby fields rushed to their aide and rescued the children. They were rushed to hospital but seeing their serious condition, doctors referred them to Aligarh,” the SHO said.On December 30, the pack of wolves had taken away a two-and-a-half-year old boy, Vikesh, in Hakimpur village. His mutilated body was found two days later.Around 3 km away, from Hakimpur village, wolves dragged away a seven-year-old girl on January 22 . The victim was identified as Anita, a resident of Latipurdheer village under Junavai police station area. Her skull was found from the fields in neighbouring Alipur village. Kashipur village is 10-15 km from the spot.
