Bareilly: Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Muniraj G on Monday suspended two policemen, Pawan Kumar,24, a trainee sub inspector at Provincial Armed Constabulary (UP-PAC) and Ankit Kumar, 34, a constable with Dial 100 team, for allegedly demanding a bribe from a 73-year-old retired Army man.An FIR has been lodged against the two constables and an accomplice, who are on the run, police said.According to superintendent of police, city, Abhinandan Singh, on February 16, both policemen allegedly took the retired Army man to the constable's room in Jogi Nawada locality and told him to pay them Rs 5 lakh or else they would frame him in a fake drug peddling case.The victim, identified as Ramkumar Gupta, is a resident of Devchara village under Bhamora police station.Giving details, Abhinandan Singh said, “Gupta had retired from the Army as honourary subedar major. On the evening of February 16, he went to the market at Station road under Kotwali police station. Suddenly, the two policemen accosted him and forcefully took him to constable Kumar’s rented house and demanded Rs 5 lakh as bribe.“When Gupta refused to give in to their demands, the two policemen called his family over the phone, demanding the money. They confined the Armyman at the house, expecting his family to pay.”However, on the morning of February 17, Gupta’s family informed the SSP’s office about the incident. According to his family, another person whose identity they do not know, was aiding the policemen, Singh said.“An FIR has been lodged against both accused policemen and one unidentified accused under IPC sections 342 (wrongful confinement) and 384 (extortion). The accused trio is absconding and we are conducting raids to nab them,” Singh added.SSP Muniraj G said, “We immediately suspended both policemen and an investigation is on in the matter.”
