Man booked for sharing morphed photo of PM with terrorist Hafiz Saeed on WhatsApp

Bareilly: A resident of Tiliyapur village, identified as Sameer, has been booked for allegedly sharing in a WhatsApp group a morphed picture showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Hafiz Saeed, co-founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and chief of Jama'at-ud-Da'wah -- a UN-designated terrorist organisation operating mainly from Pakistan. Names of others who had shared and created this message before Sameer did would be added in the FIR.” Sameer has been booked under section 499 (defamation) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the IPC. The matter has been forwarded to the cyber cell to trace the origin of the message. We have lodged an FIR under section 499, 504 of IPC and 66 of the IT Act.

Police said the accused is on the run.Following instructions from the director general of UP police, OP Singh, all SHOs in the district had created a WhatsApp group of their respective police stations by adding phone numbers of police personnel, as well as important personalities of the area. The objectionable post was shared in the WhatsApp group – Sabhrant Nagrik – created by SHO of CB Ganj.Police said that a constable deployed at CB Ganj police station had added to the WhatsApp group the mobile phone number of the Tiliyapur resident whose profile name on the group info appeared as Sameer. According to police, while sharing the morphed picture of Hafiz Saeed with PM, some derogatory comment was also posted by the accused.After the photo and derogatory comment appeared on WhatsApp, one of the group members who is said to be a BJP worker, drew the SHO’s attention to it and lodged a written complaint with police.Station house officer of CB Ganj police station, senior sub-inspector PP Varshney, told TOI, “During investigation, we found that the accused had forwarded the message on the group administrated by us. We have lodged an FIR under section 499, 504 of IPC and 66 of the IT Act. The matter has been forwarded to the cyber cell to trace the origin of the message. Names of others who had shared and created this message before Sameer did would be added in the FIR.”
