(Lakhimpur Kheri): A notice was sent to over 150 health centres in Lakhimpur Kheri district to submit a biomedical waste disposal certificate to the office of chief medical officer (CMO) by the end of the week.Health centres - private hospitals, clinics, pathology and nursing homes - have been dumping their biomedical waste with the garbage causing a potential health hazard for the district’s residents. Now, once these centres contact the pollution control board, they would be directed to the vendors, and the medical waste would be collected from their premises every day. The apex court had set strict guidelines on this issue and biomedical waste materials should be disposed of through authorised vendors in every state.

(Lakhimpur Kheri): A notice was sent to over 150 health centres in Lakhimpur Kheri district to submit a biomedical waste disposal certificate to the office of chief medical officer (CMO) by the end of the week.Health centres - private hospitals, clinics, pathology and nursing homes - have been dumping their biomedical waste with the garbage causing a potential health hazard for the district’s residents. The health centres must get a no-objectioncertificate (NOC) from the state pollution control board and the fire station officer.In the notice, CMO Manoj Agarwal has mentioned that failing to comply with the order will lead to action against the medical health centre and its licence may be revoked.Agarwal told TOI, “It has been approved that several private hospitals and health centres burn biomedical waste materials, which is not legal. The incineration of biomedical waste releases highly toxic substances into the environment. This is extremely harmful for humans and animals. The apex court had set strict guidelines on this issue and biomedical waste materials should be disposed of through authorised vendors in every state. These vendors usually supply it to bio waste treatment plant.”“We have observed that 150 centres in Lakhimpur Kheri do not have the required NOC from the pollution control board. Now, once these centres contact the pollution control board, they would be directed to the vendors, and the medical waste would be collected from their premises every day. If any such health centre fails to act on our notice, then their licence would be cancelled and a report would be sent to the pollution control board,” Agarwal added.
