65-year-old convict dies; 5th death since November

PILIBHIT: A 65-year-old convict died, on Wednesday, while allegedly being shifted from a district jail to a government hospital in Pilibhit Heera Lal, a resident of Pandari village under Neuria police station, was declared as brought dead by medical officer on emergency duty at the district government hospital. The hospital is situated two and a half kilometers away from the prison.Similar conditions were reported in four earlier cases as well, since November 7. While one prisoner died at King George’s Medical College in Lucknow on January 13. Ironically, the common cause of death in all these cases was acute respiratory problem.Names of the other prisoners were Hemraj (50), a resident of Inta Roda village under Bilsanda police station; Shri Krishna (35) of village Mathna Japti under Madhotanda police station; and Anil Kumar, a resident of Makrandpur village under Deuria police station. They died on November 7, December 6 and January 6, respectively. Khyali Ram of Neuria town under Neuria police station was the prisoner who died in KGMC. Interestingly, one of these prisoners was tested positive for HIV.District magistrate, Vaibhav Shrivastav, has ordered a magisterial inquiry.According to deputy jailor Vikram Singh Yadav, Heera Lal had been lodged in the district jail since November 12, 2018. The district and the sessions’ court convicted Lal of murder. Lal was given a life sentence in 2014. Later, he was granted bail by the high court. However, due to his absence before the HC on proceeding dates, the HC issued directions to the chief judicial magistrate to issue warrant against him. So, Lal returned to jail, Yadav added.
