Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in Shahjahanpur

The lekhpal has conducted an investigation for initiating the compensation from the chief minister’s farmer relief fund.” Shahjahanpur: A 42-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide in Sindhauli block of Shahjahanpur district after failing to repay Rs 1.5 lakh loan he had borrowed from a bank and over his failure to arrange money for his daughter’s marriage which was scheduled on May 28.The farmer, Susheel Kumar of Sakulia village in Shahjahanpur district, had shot himself into his stomach with a country-made pistol on Saturday evening. “I urge the government to provide ex gratia to the bereaved family, because they don’t have any source of earning for them.”Confirming the suicide, station house officer (SHO) of Sindhauli police station Rahul Singh said, “A farmer has committed suicide in Sakulia village. In their statement, victim’s family members said the deceased was disturbed due to a pending loan and other responsibilities. Besides, the date of his daughter marriage was approaching and he was unable to arrange money due to failed crop this season.

He was rushed to the district hospital, where he died during the course of treatment on Sunday, farmer’s elder brother Subhash Kumar Bhojwal told TOI.Bhojwal said, “Susheel had Rs1.5 lakh bank loan pending against him. Besides, the date of his daughter marriage was approaching and he was unable to arrange money due to failed crop this season. Moreover, Susheel was yet to receive any benefit under the government’s loan waiver scheme for his failed crop.”“After receiving a bank recovery notice, Susheel, who had only four bighas, had started behaving strangely. As he was very attached to his ancestral land, he shot himself while standing in the middle of his field,” said family members.Susheel is survived by his wife Shanti Devi, three daughters and a son.Bhojwal said they had not imagined that he could take such a drastic step. “I urge the government to provide ex gratia to the bereaved family, because they don’t have any source of earning for them.”Confirming the suicide, station house officer (SHO) of Sindhauli police station Rahul Singh said, “A farmer has committed suicide in Sakulia village. We have sent his body for autopsy. In their statement, victim’s family members said the deceased was disturbed due to a pending loan and other responsibilities.
