Former state chief minister Mayawati had laid the foundation stone of the project nearly two decades ago. The airport will come up near Mudia Ahmed Nagar village at the Pilibhit bypass, next to the Trishul Air Base. Following the state government’s approval, in March 2015, to purchase land from farmers, the district administration had utilised a fund of Rs 60 crore for the purpose. The airport is likely to attract tourists visiting Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, Dudhwa Tiger Reserve and Nainital. “The airport will see a huge footfall since a lot of wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers visit Dudhwa and Pilibhit Tiger Reserves every year. Besides, Bareilly is the gateway to Kumaon region. Huriya Kamal, who owns a zari firm, said, “Artisans in Bareilly make our products and we carry them to Delhi and Mumbai by road or train. It will increase the income of artisans and zari firm owners too.”
