To gauge STP capacity in Moradabad, team surveys untreated sewage falling into Ramganga

Bareilly: A team comprising officials from Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), IIT-Delhi, Jal Nigam and Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has started a survey of drains that discharge their waste into river Ramganga in Moradabad. The report had revealed that the river is most polluted in Moradabad. This survey will help in preparing a blueprint for assessing the capacity of the STP needed as also draft a map to divert the drains from the river to other locations. The team is conducting a survey to estimate the amount of untreated sewage that drains into this tributary of the Ganga before drafting plans of a sewage treatment plant (STP) in Moradabad.R K Singh, regional officer, UPPCB, said, “As many as 19 drains in Moradabad discharge untreated waste into the Ramganga, the team has been taking samples from the river to estimate the amount of untreated sewage that goes into the river. For instance, though the permissible limit for dissolved oxygen in river is 5 mg/litre, it was found to be 0.79 mg/l, 0.92 mg/l and 1.10 mg/l in winter, summer and monsoon respectively in 2016-17 at Katghar site of Moradabad.“We conducted the survey at two different sites in Moradabad and found that Ramganga becomes most polluted in the city,” said Neelima Gupta who conducted the research.

Once the STP comes up here, the treated water will be given to farmers and remaining will be discharged into Ramganga.”Earlier, TOI had reported that a three-year research was conducted by a professor of MJP Rohilkhand University under the aegis of UP Council for Agriculture Research on Ramganga from its originating point in Pauri Garhwal district in Uttarakhand to Kannuaj, where the river merges with Ganga. The report had revealed that the river is most polluted in Moradabad.
