Bareilly: A day after a Delhi court dismissed a CBI plea seeking lie-detection test on the nine Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students, who had got into a confrontation with fellow pupil Najeeb Ahmed before he disappeared, saying this can't happen without their consent, Najeeb's mother on Wednesday said only these students can provide leads about the whereabouts of her missing son. "If not these men, who else would know about my son's whereabouts," she said.Fatima Nafees said, “I believe that they know where my son is. They are the ones who had gone to Najeeb’s room and had an altercation with him following which he disappeared mysteriously. Though the case was handed over to CBI six months ago, the agency is yet to get a breakthrough. Only these students can give leads on where my son is.”“At times, I feel that, since we belong to the minority community, we are facing such hardships. Had we been rich and powerful, our son would have been back home long back and the assailants would have been behind bars,” she added. It has been more than a year since Najeeb went missing on October 15, 2016, but his mother believes that he is alive and will one day return home. “I have faith in Allah and hope that He will ensure the safe return of Najeeb,” said Fatima, tears rolling down her cheeks.“Najeeb is innocent, and even if he gets a chance to escape, he would not gather the courage to do so. I don’t know where to go and what to do to bring him back home. I will keep looking for him till my last breath,” said Fatima, a native of Badaun.“I take multiple trips to Delhi every month. At my age, it is not easy to travel by public transport. But I go there with the hope that I will get some leads in the case. So far, I have always returned home disappointed,” she said.A diabetic, Fatima's health has noticeably deteriorated in the past one year. “I just can’t stop thinking about my son. I have been told that I am suffering from anxiety. Everyone in our family — my husband, two sons and a daughter — is worried and is going through anxious times since the time he (Najeeb) went missing,” Fatima said.Fatima’s other son, Mujeeb, could not take up a job as a geologist in Rajasthan as he could not let his mother travel alone to Delhi. Her husband is a heart patient and his condition has only worsened in the past year. The family claims that they have sold almost all their valuables just to exist and find Najeeb.
