Bescom starts project to track the life cycle of transformers

During rains, if there is an interruption in power supply, chances are that a glitch has developed in the transformer. If you hear a transformer burst, you know power supply to that area is likely to take time to be restored. “From the date of inception till the time it is scrapped, the project will track the life cycle of every transformer, which will be stored in the software. Bescom believes that the pilot project will be able to tackle the basic problems in transformer management. The power utility is implementing a new Distribution Transformer Lifecycle Management Software (DTLMS) for approximately three lakh transformers spread across eight districts.

more-in If you hear a transformer burst, you know power supply to that area is likely to take time to be restored. During rains, if there is an interruption in power supply, chances are that a glitch has developed in the transformer. The massive structures occupying parts of the city’s footpaths have also been reasons for accidents. The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company has now come up with one possible solution for all these problems. The power utility is implementing a new Distribution Transformer Lifecycle Management Software (DTLMS) for approximately three lakh transformers spread across eight districts. Bescom believes that the pilot project will be able to tackle the basic problems in transformer management. “From the date of inception till the time it is scrapped, the project will track the life cycle of every transformer, which will be stored in the software. Through this, we will be able to study the reasons behind transformer failures and reduce them. Our main aim is to reduce the failures, which are a cause for power interruptions as well as accidents,” said a senior Bescom official. An external agency has been appointed to execute the project, which has also been entrusted with the task of maintenance for a year, the official added. The project involves affixing codes for each transformer, creating a database of all these codes, development of a common web-based software to maintain details of transformers and their life cycles, as well as a mobile application. In a circular, the AEEs and section officers of all sub-divisions have been asked to coordinate with the firm on providing line clearance and manpower for implementation of the project. Sub-divisional officers have been tasked with the responsibility of creating an accurate transformer database in the DTLMS and channelising all transformer-related activities through the software.
