The contenders for the ward are Janata Dal (S) candidate Aishwarya B.N., BJP candidate Chamundeshwari G. and Congress candidate Srividya Shashikumar. The by-election for Binnypet ward, held on Monday, saw voter turnout of less than 50%, and way below the 72.13% State average in the recently held State Assembly elections. The Congress leader was a two-time councillor from Binnypet, which comes under Gandhinagar Assembly constituency.

The ward reported a 43.54% voter turnout. The ward, reserved for general (woman) category, saw polling taking place in 37 booths. A total of 34,572 people — 17,746 men and 16,826 women — were eligible to cast their votes. A holiday had been declared for local institutions, departments and industries. The contenders for the ward are Janata Dal (S) candidate Aishwarya B.N., BJP candidate Chamundeshwari G. and Congress candidate Srividya Shashikumar. Reports of altercations The bonhomie displayed by the coalition partners for the Jayanagar constituency election, was missing in the Binnypet by-poll, with altercations being reported between Congress and JD(S) workers during voting. The police and senior leaders of both parties had to rush to the spot to diffuse the situation. The by-election was necessitated by the death of Binnypet councillor Mahadevamma Nagaraj in January following cardiac arrest. She had been on a pilgrimage to Tirupati with her family. The Congress leader was a two-time councillor from Binnypet, which comes under Gandhinagar Assembly constituency. Counting of votes will take place on June 20.
