Six-coach metro train causes a stir

With peak hour seeing jam-packed coaches, metro staff did their bit to ease the crowd by helping them hurry towards the additional three coaches. In fact, the morning train was as full as the three-coach train. Some commuters who were unaware of just how long the six-coach train was, or of its arrival, were seen making a run for the emptier last coaches once the train arrived. About the minor confusions, he said announcements will be made regularly about the six-coach train, and markings will also be made at the stations. BMRCL Managing Director Mahendra Jain said the six-coach train had made six trips in all on Saturday: four in the morning (against the planned three trips) and two in the evening.

more-in Commuters rushing to the less crowded new coaches, some of them looking for the markings in the extended sections of the station, and the metro staff urging people to use the new coaches in the augmented Namma Metro trains: a day after it was inaugurated, the new six-coach trains caused quite a stir on Saturday during its few runs on its first day of full-fledged operations. Though the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) had said the single six-coach train, which was flagged off on Friday, will primarily cater to the peak hour passenger traffic on the weekdays, it decided to operate the train on the inaugural weekend. The train had made one trip for regular commuters on Friday. Announcements were made at the station about the new train before its arrival. However, with no markings made at the stations (which say where the train doors open), commuters had to estimate where the doors would open once it arrived. Some commuters who were unaware of just how long the six-coach train was, or of its arrival, were seen making a run for the emptier last coaches once the train arrived. With peak hour seeing jam-packed coaches, metro staff did their bit to ease the crowd by helping them hurry towards the additional three coaches. “I heard the announcement and got into the last coach. The last three coaches were fairly empty while the first three were packed,” said Sharath, a commuter. The arrival of the new train also saw the ‘women only’ entry sign being shifted around at the Purple Line stations. The confusion arose as the three-coach trains have the first two doors reserved for women passengers while the new train has a full coach reserved for them. With the trains alternating between the six and the three coach train, male passengers who stood beyond the sign had to rush towards the emptier second coach of the three-coach train when they realised that the sign had been pushed well beyond the first coach. However, the predominant reaction was of relief. “I use the metro every day and have to take the Purple Line to office and back during the peak hours. I hope it eases the congestion inside the train, as it is extremely difficult otherwise,” said Ashwathy, who travels from her home in Basavanagudi to Cubbon Park station every day. BMRCL Managing Director Mahendra Jain said the six-coach train had made six trips in all on Saturday: four in the morning (against the planned three trips) and two in the evening. “Our staff were wondering whether to run the train at all on a weekend. But I got reports that they were all pretty full. In fact, the morning train was as full as the three-coach train. Overall on Saturday, taking into account the fact that each trip was up to capacity (2004), around 24,000 people may have taken the new train. I have asked for the same schedule to be followed on Sunday as well,” he said. About the minor confusions, he said announcements will be made regularly about the six-coach train, and markings will also be made at the stations. “There was also some confusion about the women’s coach, as many were still using the first two entrances. All these will get sorted out soon,” he added.
